El rugby femenino coruñés, protagonista del fin de semana que abre las puertas de Río 2016

Paula Medín, Vanesa Rial y Berta García disputan en Dublín, entre el sábado y el domingo, el Torneo Preolímpico de Rugby 7, que asignará la última plaza pendiente para los Juegos de Río de Janeiro.

Tras el éxito cosechado el pasado fin de semana por la Selección Española Masculina de Rugby 7, que logró la clasificación para los Juegos Olímpicos de Río de Janeiro, le toca el turno ahora a las chicas de la selección femenina, entrenada por José Antonio Barrio ‘Yunque’. El rugby coruñés está representado en esta cita trascendental por las jugadoras del CRAT Paula Medín y Vanesa Rial, y por la también internacional Berta García, hasta hace dos años en las filas del club coruñés.

Las “Leonas” están concentradas en Irlanda desde el pasado miércoles y en la primera jornada, la del sábado se enfrentan a los combinados de Túnez (12.06 horas), Venezuela (15.12 horas) y México (18.18 horas). De la ventaja que obtengan en estos tres encuentros dependerán en buena medida los cruces para la decisiva jornada dominical. Los encuentros se pueden seguir por streaming a través de worldrugby.org. España parte con serias opciones de ganar estos tres encuentros y disputar el domingo la única plaza aún vacante para acudir a los Juegos Olímpicos de Río, en los que el Seven se estrena como deporte olímpico. El Seven es una variante del rugby 15 tradicional en el que prima el espectáculo, en un terreno de juego de dimensiones más reducidas y con una dinámica explosiva y emocionante. Las tres jugadoras vinculadas al club coruñés llevan muchos meses volcadas con el objetivo de acudir a los Juegos defendiendo la camiseta española.

Las coruñesas no estarán solas en Dublín. Desde la distancia, toda la familia que forma el CRAT se siente parte importante del reto de este fin de semana y vivirá con especial emoción los últimos días del reto. Los más fieles al balón oval y al equipo azul y negro se han citado para seguir juntos lo que suceda en el estadio UCD Bowl.

No en vano, y tras completar en 2015 la temporada más gloriosa de los 40 años de historia del club con el primer título oficial de la historia del rugby gallego (Campeonas de la División de Honor), la temporada 15-16 ha dejado en los resultados la huella de la especial dedicación de las jugadoras al “sueño de Río”. El rugby femenino le debe una al CRAT. En la memoria de los aficionados todavía está presente la gesta de las chicas que, en el partido en el que se jugaban la clasificación para los play off, a punto estuvieron de firmar un éxito antológico.

Tras la insistencia de Paula y Vanesa, el seleccionador accedió a que ambas jugadoras viajasen desde la concentración de Madrid a A Coruña para disputar en el campo de la Universidade el Decisivo encuentro frente a Getxo Artea RT. Las dos internacionales se desplazaron con la condición impuesta por el seleccionador de que ninguna de ellas disputase más de medio tiempo.

Agotadas por el Berta Garcíaviaje en tren y sin apenas descanso, decidieron que Paula Medín disputase los primeros 40 minutos y Vanesa, la segunda mitad. Al descanso, y con un 7-20 en el marcador a favor de las vascas, las esperanzas eran casi nulas. A la vuelta de la caseta el campo de Elviña vivió un momento histórico de la mano de Vanesa Rial. En un arranque de coraje, la del Barbanza se echó el equipo a las espaldas y lideró una remontada espectacular, anotando cuatro de los cinco ensayos del CRAT en esos 40 minutos y dejando la miel en los labios de una entusiasmada afición. Faltó un ensayo para el milagro, pero sin tiempo ni para comer, las dos internacionales se subieron al tren de regreso a Madrid con la tranquilidad que da haberlo dado todo por su equipo.

Demostraciones de compañerismo y entrega como esta son las que han convertido la cita de este fin de semana en la fiesta con la que el CRAT quiere celebrar su 40º aniversario y por las que la familia oval coruñesa vivirá con pasión lo que suceda en Dublín.
